Rotarians were taken on a journey to the Old West into an old mining town where the mines were no longer in operation, and where an empty theater and a hotel stood witnesses of a more glorious past as a wealthy mining town. Sounds familiar? Well, it’s not Aspen, the Wheeler or the Jerome during the “quiet years”, but the town of Deadrock, Nevada. This gold mining town with a similar fate after the gold mines produced no more gold served as the stage for the Gershwin brothers’ Broadway musical “Crazy for you”, which the Aspen Community Theatre is performing until November 18 at the District Theatre. Rotarians attended the opening night and enjoyed a breathtakingly professional performance with local talent from the valley, including our very own Jeanette Darnauer on the Reed flute, and Rotary alumna Naomi Havlen singing and dancing as “Naughty Baby” Irene Roth.

As in previous years, Rotarians attended the opening night after being hosted by local high schoolers for delicious pasta and dessert. The Aspen High School’s “Outreach Service Club” holds this annual “Spaghetti Dinner” for the club as a fundraiser for the students. The event is organized and supervised by Kathy and Warren Klug.
